What to Know
When President Donald Trump spoke on Monday, March 2, people expected him to talk about Iran. But the 79-year-old veered off topic during his speech, talking about his White House ballroom project and how his wife Melania feels about the construction noises. Given that he just attacked Iran over the weekend, it really didn’t seem like an appropriate time to be talking about the drapes he picked out, and yet, that’s exactly what he did.
Prior to this moment, people had already accused Trump of having a careless, detached attitude when it comes to U.S. military operations in Iran. When he said Americans would likely die, people compared him to Lord Farquaad from Shrek.
And amid everyone’s concerns about U.S. military operations in Iran, Trump genuinely bragged about his ballroom.
The rant certainly didn’t make him seem more concerned or empathetic; it just made him come across as even more out of touch. “We have a lot of great service members here with us, too, in this beautiful building,” Trump said. “Isn’t it beautiful? We’re adding on to the building a little bit. We’re improving the building. See that nice drape?…I picked those drapes during my first term. I always like gold.”
He then said the ballroom will be “spectacular” because he’s “built many a ballroom” and he thinks “it’s going to be the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world.” But when people saw a clip of him talking about it on X, they were not impressed—because they really don’t care about Trump’s ballroom, especially right now.
“NOBODY F—ING CARES ABOUT THE BALLROOM WHEN WE ARE AT WAR!” one person wrote in response. Another person couldn’t believe that he was really talking about his ballroom during that speech. “omg he’s actually going on about the ballroom now?” they questioned.

He then started talking about his wife’s complaints.
Because clearly, that’s what everyone cares about right now. “When you hear all the hammering out there, you know why the first lady is not thrilled exactly,” Trump continued. “She said, ‘Will the pile drivers ever stop?’ You know they go from six in the morning until 11:30 in the evening. Can you imagine?”
He continued, “To me, that’s a beautiful sound. She doesn’t like it. Trump then added that his ballroom project would be “under budget and ahead of schedule.”
Sarcastically, one critic on X wrote, “I woke up this morning really worried that setting the entire Middle East on fire would push the progress on the ballroom to the back pages. Thank God I had nothing to worry about.”
People actually found Trump’s priorities sickening.
Another critic said, “While the citizens of his country and hundreds or thousands of other people are dying in the war he started a few days ago, he is dealing with the curtains at the press conference. That is an insult to the people killed.” Someone else said Trump “can never show emotions for others or focus on anything but himself.”
Just proof that the US is headed by a mentally disturbed person. While the citizens of his country and hundreds or thousands of other people are dying in the war he started a few days ago, heis dealing with the curtains at the press conference. That is an insult to the people killed https://t.co/KdZOvrZ5p3

One person called him a “babbling fool,” while another claimed he’s clearly “not well.” Many others saw it as a sign that Trump doesn’t really care. Someone wrote, “He quickly got bored of talking about the senseless war he started and US service members’ killing, then shifted to talking about drapes and his ballroom. He’s incapable of feeling empathy and cannot fake humanity.”
