What to Know
As President Donald Trump announced United States military operations in Iran, people couldn’t believe how casual and detached he sounded when he said Americans might die. “The lives of American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties,” Trump said in the video shared on social media. “That often happens in war.”
People have compared this speech to one given by Lord Farquaad, the main antagonist in Shrek. In the film, Lord Farquaad says, “Some of you may die, but it’s a sacrifice I am willing to make.” (Even Marjorie Taylor Greene reposted an X post comparing Trump to Lord Farquaad).
Trump’s casual tone really bothered people.
After seeing the clip of Trump, one critic on X wrote, “He talks about US service men and women possibly dying with a shrug. ‘Oh, no big deal. That’s what happens in war.'” Someone else noticed that Trump sounded like he was simply “talking about bad weather.” They wrote, “Not sons. Not daughters. Not families that will never be whole again. Just ‘casualties’ — an abstract cost on a spreadsheet. Easy to be calm about sacrifice when it’s never your blood on the ground. Easy to sound tough when someone else’s child pays the price.”

When Trump announced the deaths of three U.S. service members, he continued to sound casual to people.
a slurring Trump in new video on American troops killed by Iran: “Sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That's the way it is. Likely be more.“

In a video shared to Truth Social on Sunday, March 1, Trump said, “As one nation, we grieve for the true American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, even as we continue the righteous mission for which they gave their lives. We pray for the full recovery of the wounded and send our immense love and eternal gratitude to the families of the fallen.”
Then, he went on to say that more people would die. “And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That’s the way it is. Likely be more,” he added.
Reacting to the clip on BlueSky, one person wrote, “He has no empathy, no sadness, no real care. So nonchalant with the ‘there will be more.’ Families are grieving and his attitude is ‘oh well’. Disgusting.”
Another person argued that Trump “takes no responsibility” and in his mind, it seems to be “something that passively occurs and it has nothing to do with him.” And someone else added, “The total lack of any sympathy or humility tells us exactly who he is….”
