Trump Reminds Everyone That ‘People Will Die’

President Donald Trump is once again reminding everyone that people will die as a result of U.S. military action in Iran, and people are concerned about how unfazed he sounds. When he first announced U.S. military operations in Iran, people couldn’t believe how calm and detached he seemed. That initial concern (and all of the jokes and Lord Farquaad comparisons that followed) has not seemed to have any influence on Trump, though.

More recently, Time magazine asked Trump if Americans should be worried about potential retaliation from Iran. His response? “I guess.”

He again explained that people die in wars.

Based on how Trump described it, he doesn’t really seem to think that anyone should be all that concerned or surprised by deaths caused by his war in Iran. Explaining his response to the question about retaliation, he said, “But I think they’re worried about that all the time. We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things. Like I said, some people will die. When you go to war, some people will die.”

And yeah, this is something that he has said before, and people were bothered by it then too. In a video previously shared on social media, Trump said, “The lives of American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. That often happens in war.”

Then, after announcing the deaths of U.S. service members, Trump said, “And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That’s the way it is. Likely be more.”

Understandably, people do not find this reassuring.

After hearing Trump’s latest questionable response, one Redditor wrote, “He can’t even pretend to care lol.” Several people have pointed out that Trump was similarly nonchalant at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is exactly what he did with COVID,” another Redditor commented. “He treats American lives like background actors in his own personal biopic. If you aren’t a billionaire donor or a family member he actually likes, you are officially ‘expendable’ to him.”

Someone else noted, “He’s actually incapable of empathy,” and another critic sarcastically wrote, “I feel so comforted.”

Again, people accused Trump of acting exactly like Shrek‘s Lord Farquaad and saying the quiet part out loud. In the film, Lord Farquaad says, “Some of you may die, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.” As TikTok creator @enolls put it, “Lord Farquaad from Shrek is our President” now.
