What to Know
President Donald Trump just said the quiet part out loud. Obviously, the fact that he’s working on a White House ballroom and has changed the name of the Kennedy Center has sparked a lot of concerns. And according to Fox News host Jesse Watters, Trump outright admitted that he’s building the ballroom as a “monument” to himself. During Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, Watters said he was enjoying Mexican food with the president when Trump asked him if he wanted to see the ballroom. It was during that conversation that Trump admitted what many have suspected.
Watters simply laughed about it, like Trump’s decision to construct a monument for himself was funny. Others found it far more concerning — but also totally believable.
Watters said Trump asked him if he wanted to see ‘the rendition of the big, beautiful ballroom.’
“I said, ‘Sure, let me see it,'” Watters continued. “He rolls the whole thing out. And guys, I don’t know if you know this — the ballroom is huge. Like, I said, ‘Mr. President, the ballroom is four times the size of the White House.'”
But there’s a reason the ballroom is so extra. According to Watters, Trump explained it to him like this: “He said, ‘Jesse, it’s a monument. I’m building a monument to myself — because no one else will.'”
On some level, people think he’s right.
Reacting to his claim that “no one else will,” many people on social media said the same thing: “He’s right about that. No one will.” Instead, people speculated, Americans will spend a lot of time undoing the changes he’s made and trying to forget him.
And while many agreed that Trump was correct in assuming that no one would build him a monument, they also questioned how Trump doesn’t have enough already to be remembered by. Several people argued that Trump already has “tons of monuments,” including his buildings, his company, a kid who “bears his whole name,” his Bibles, and his “fugly gold shoes,” among other things. One critic wrote, “What his Trump skyscrapers aren’t enough self-tribute? This guy I swear. World’s most inflated and fragile ego.”

Of course, Watters was the one who shared this, so we don’t know for sure that this is exactly what Trump said. But people had no reason to doubt Watters’ story, as it sounded exactly like something Trump would say. “I actually believe every word of this,” one person on Reddit wrote. “The idea of Trump saying ‘I’m building this as a monument to myself’ is maybe the most truthful thing Donald Trump has ever said.”
To many, the explanation felt “sad” and “pathetic.” Some people also pointed to larger concerns. “Great,” one of them said. “And we’ve now established that presidents get to do whatever the f— they want whenever they f— they want up to and including slapping their name on other people’s buildings.”
