Pranks can be a good time, but it is important to make sure the person or tiny human being pranked is actually receptive to it. There’s a new viral prank taking social media by storm called “the egg crack challenge.” It’s exactly what it sounds like. A parent bakes with their child and when the moment for eggs comes, they crack the egg on the child’s head instead of the bowl.
Many on social media think this is a cruel joke to play on a child. Dad Aaron Zapata tried this with his five kids. Mom Janelle Leon did it with her 3-year-old daughter. Experts advise asking permission before surprising children to give them agency in this situation.
Aaron took different approaches with each of his five kids. "We are a 'prank family'" he explained. "You never know if someone is hiding behind a door ready to jump out and scare you." For his son Kyan, he chose to crack the egg on his own head instead of his son’s.
"Every kid responds differently and we do our best to gauge that," Aaron said. He posted videos of him performing the pranks on TikTok and received criticism for it. "It's not for me to judge what others think, but know my children better than anyone else in the world and if I thought this prank caused long-term damage, I wouldn't have done it,” he concluded.
"My sweet baby [is] such a good sport," Janelle captioned her Instagram reel. She cracked two eggs on her daughter Raelyn’s head and tried to go for a third, but Raelyn declined. "What did mama just do? She cracked an egg on my head. Silly mama!" Raelyn said in the video.
Janelle is not listening to the critics in her comments. In fact, she deleted them. "There are a lot of sensitive people out there and everyone is entitled to their opinion," she explained. "My daughter is fine — she is not being emotionally harmed."

Chazz Lewis is a parent and teacher coach in North Carolina. "Parents can have positive intentions and still make a negative impact," he notes. He advises asking permission to crack the egg as kids are not yet fully equipped yet to manage their emotions. He also does not want them to learn bad habits from this prank. "Kids could learn that it's OK to take advantage of those with less power, for their amusement,” he advises.
