Trigger warning: This story features a depiction of both physical and emotional abuse.
If you’re someone who has been in a toxic or abusive relationship, you likely understand how difficult it can be to permanently walk away from someone you once loved who is causing you harm.
Carolyn Reichler was only 23 years old when she fell in love with another artist and decided to take the plunge and get married. They both shared a passion for the arts, so once Carolyn met her soon-to-be husband, there was really no turning back.
Due to a brain aneurysm, Carolyn’s father died when she was just a little girl, so she was raised by a fierce single mother named Helen who worked as an art teacher. Helen spotted her daughter’s artistic talents from an early age and always encouraged her to pursue her passion for both sculpting and illustrating.
While attending university in Florida, Carolyn met Jeremy. Their relationship escalated quickly and when Carolyn went to tell her mom about their upcoming wedding plans, Helen urged her daughter to slow down and just date for a while while she pursued her craft.
Like most young adults in their 20s, Carolyn didn’t listen to her mother’s concerns. She soon moved away and Jeremy became the center of her world.
