Billy the Kid. Butch Cassidy. Doc Holliday. Wild Bill Hickok. Heck, even John Wayne. These are all names that have become synonymous with what we think of when we hear the word "cowboy," but what's perhaps most amazing is that none of these famous folks were really "boys" at all. They were all grown men.
There are very few actual cowboys, if you will. It takes a young man many years to be able to learn the ways of roping cattle, tending the ranch, and growing into the strong body that he needs to do many of the things a cowboy does.
Sure, there may be videos of cute little boys flipping on their cowboys hats and singing along with their cowboy dads, but they're not out there doing the actual work of a cowboy. That is, maybe, until now.
One of the coolest things a cowboy (aside from all the tall tales of gunfights at the O.K. Corral) is become a fast-talking auctioneer. Surely you've seen them before. In fact, we even shared a video once about an auctioneer whose "cattle rattle" was so fast and furious that it even sounded great with a bass-thumping beat pumped over it.
But we've never seen one quite like 10-year-old Cash Owens from Blue Earth, Montana. In the below video from USA Today, you'll get to meet the diminutive cowboy who nearly died when he was a newborn, but who has now gone on to become the main attraction at his family's Blue Earth Stockyards.
His rapid-fire delivery is something that you must see. That amazing auctioneer's "cattle rattle" is an acquired skill and there are many adults who can't even do what Cash does in this video. In fact, his auction-calling skills are so strong that both spectators and his parents (who have owned Blue Earth Stockyards for about the past year) think he's actually helped sell more cattle just because he's so good at what he does.
It's a short, but really amazing, story that also shows how Cash's little brother even gets involved lending a hand selling cookies at the cattle auctions.
What a cool story and what an amazing 10-year-old. I can't wait to see what this cowboy can do in another ten years.
