Amy Schumer is a comedy favorite, but her sense of humor isn't for everyone. The comedian recently made a joke about fellow mom Hilaria Baldwin that didn't quite land with everyone.
It all started with a photo Hilaria posted earlier this week, taken by her daughter. In the photo, Hilaria is in a bra and underwear, holding her youngest child, 3-month-old Eduardo. Of course, many fans couldn't believe how Hilaria looked considering she only gave birth three months ago.
It's the kind of differences between other women and herself that Amy will often joke on. She took a screen grab of the shot and shared it on her own Instagram, pretending it was her holiday card with 1-year-old son Gene.
Hilaria was a good sport and responded with laughter in the comments, though she'd later reveal she didn't entirely get the joke. It was the rest of the comments that took a lighthearted attempt at humor to a darker place. Commenters began body-shaming Hilaria and women like her, and she has since responded to those criticisms.
Early Christmas week, Hilaria Baldwin shared a photo taken by her daughter, 7-year-old Carmen.
"Post bath, getting ready for the day photo by Carmen ✨…can't stop smelling this baby ," she captioned the shot. It showed her holding 3-month-old Eduardo while wearing just a bra and underwear.
Amy later reposted Hilaria's shot as a joke. She tried to play it off like it was her holiday card from herself and 1-year-old son Gene.
"Gene and I wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Enjoy it with whatever family members are talking to you this year. ," she captioned the shot.
Hilaria wasn't sure she understood the joke, but she had a good enough sense of humor to laugh along. She shared the post on her own Instagram stories.
"I literally had to have someone explain this joke to me… Still don't get it 100%… but… I'll like it. And I'll comment some emojis."
The comments on the photo of Hilaria took on a mean-spirited nature, however. Amy's comments had all kinds of people slamming what Hilaria looks like, what she was trying to accomplish with that picture, and more in a nasty and hurtful way. Amy never engaged in any of that behavior, but it was rampant in her comments. She has since deleted the post.
The comments got so brutal that Hilaria had no choice but to address the situation. She shared a video to Instagram and emphasized she wasn't at all upset with Amy. She did feel the need to address the nastiness that had been said about her.
"I've posted a million photos like that in the past. Didn't think it was going to be a big deal. Ended up being a big deal," Hilaria noted.
She continued defending Amy, insisting there was nothing wrong with what she did.
"Now, I love jokes. I think it was very funny. I actually don't understand it really well, the joke, but some people tried to explain it to me so I can kind of get it. But I love jokes," she said.
"I love making fun of myself. I love when other people make fun of me. What is the point in living life if you're not laughing? You guys all know I make fun of my husband all the time and if you're gonna dish it out, you better be able to accept it back."
She then explained why she found some of the comments to be hurtful and part of a bigger problem.
"Does it hurt my feelings if some people are out there, who I don't even know, critiquing why I might post a photo, and if I had looked differently, would I have posted that photo?" she asked.
"I sure hope so."
Hilaria explained she's here for all celebrations of all body types, but that others don't see it that way.
"If you're doing body inclusivity, that's body inclusivity for all," she said.
Hilaria particularly took offense to the idea that having the body she has doesn't gel with being a mom, and that ultimately "moms don't look like that."
"Some moms do," she replied.
"This mom does, and I am included in the inclusivity."
She went on to explain that she doesn't stay in a certain shape for anyone's approval but because staying active keeps her healthy. She said how tough it is to fit fitness into her schedule when she's spending so much time with her five kids right now and recently broke her ankle.
Hilaria also acknowledged that some of her smaller stature is just natural. "This is what I look like. I come from smaller people," she said.
"I have been a fitness person my entire life, and there you go. Period, end of story."
"There's no need that I need to apologize for that, just like there's no need that anyone else needs to apologize for what they look like and their life story," Hilaria added.
"So basically, I want to say this. Body inclusivity, that means everybody. Every shape, every size, everything."
Hilaria concluded by urging people to recognize how negative this year has been and how no one needs any more of it.
"Let's be a little bit kinder, a little bit kinder because everybody is suffering mentally," she said.
In the comments to the video, Amy apologized for what happened.
Hilaria assured, "amyschumer Girl, don’t even apologize! You always make me laugh .
"My only intentions were to address some of the the not so namaste behavior some people went running wild with after. You don’t need to take responsibility for their actions . Much love and light xoxo."
