The attorney general of New York has filed a lawsuit to dissolve the National Rife Association (NRA). This news follows an 18-month investigation in which the state of New York concluded the NRA is "fraught with fraud and abuse."
Attorney General Letitia James explains, "The NRA's influence has been so powerful that the organization went unchecked for decades while top executives funneled millions into their own. The NRA is fraught with fraud and abuse, which is why, today, we seek to dissolve the NRA, because no organization is above the law."
As the news began to wind around the internet, many organizations took note and issued their own statements. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America posted a link to an article about the lawsuit on its Facebook page, noting, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Wayne LaPierre and his cronies at the NRA, who have long put their own self-interests ahead of public safety in order to line their pockets and enrich themselves."
The Moms Demand organization was founded in December 2012 following the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Twenty-six people, including 20 children and six staff members, were brutally murdered on December 14, 2012.
"The day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Shannon started a Facebook group with the message that all Americans can and should do more to reduce gun violence. The online conversation turned into a movement of moms, dads, students, families, concerned citizens and survivors working together with our partners in the gun violence prevention movement to end this uniquely American crisis."
A second well-known organization, Everytown for Gun Safety, also commented on the lawsuit:
"The NRA's leadership cares about two things: enriching gun manufacturers and enriching themselves. Fear-mongering and corruption are its legacy. The NRA bears more responsibility for the gun violence crisis than any other entity in America, and we will be glad to see it go."
