When you become a mother, you quickly learn that everyone has an opinion and is not afraid to share it with you. It can be difficult to cut through the noise and realize the only opinion that matters is your own. Breastfeeding is one of the topics people love to give unsolicited advice about.
Supermodel Ashley Graham isn’t having it. She has chosen to forge her own path in motherhood, not only normalizing breastfeeding but also giving it up when she found it was not for her and her twins. She believes each mom has to assess the situation for themselves and not worry so much about societal expectations.
Ashley opened up about her breastfeeding journey on an appearance on The Daily Show guest-hosted by Chelsea Handler. Ashley shares three children with husband Justin Ervin. Their son Isaac was born in January 2020. Their twins, Roman and Malachi, were born in January 2022. With Isaac, Ashley believed breastfeeding was the only “right” way to feed her son. The twins quickly changed her mind.
“I was like, ‘I’m not doing this,’” Ashley recounted. “‘This is not working here. Both of you want both of these? Like, that’s a lot of work.’ So I stopped breastfeeding when they were 5 months and I gave them the best formula that I could find in America.”
The twins are thriving being bottle-fed. Ashley has no regrets. “These little guys are so strong and so happy so I don’t think we should be telling people how they should be feeding their kids,” she said.
