Leo, Nick, and Steven Argel are all 14-year-old triplets, and they have the unique challenge of also being blind. With a single mom who sympathized, but couldn’t understand their specific experiences with blindness, growing up was often very difficult — until they met someone very special, someone who would later become their mentor.
A blind man himself, Ollie Cantos lived in their community of Arlington, VA, and felt compelled to meet the boys when he heard about their struggles. "These three blind kids […] were just having a lot of challenges," Cantos says, recalling the moment they were all matched up for the first time. Maybe — just maybe — he could make a small difference in the triplets’ lives if he could convey that they weren’t as alone as they might have felt.
It’s like the man with vision impairment who studies the night sky, or the legally blind rock climber. Those with a fighting spirit can overcome any obstacle, and disabilities never define a person’s worth.
"I've decided to adopt my boys because they're everything to me," says Cantos, and the love is absolutely palpable between all four of them. He also has a YouTube channel where he discusses the ups and downs of the adoption process, and how far they’ve come as a family.
