Blythe Danner has revealed that she is currently in remission following a fight against the same cancer that her husband, Bruce Paltrow, died from. Blythe was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, which she initially kept from her kids, Gwyneth and Jake.
Blythe said, "Everyone is touched by cancer in some way, but it's unusual for a couple to have the same cancer."
She also admitted that when she received her diagnosis in March 2018, she immediately joked with her husband. Blythe said, "I remember I looked up at heaven and said to Bruce, 'Are you lonely up there?' It's a sneaky disease. But I'm fine and dandy now. And I'm lucky to be alive."
Blythe also admitted to hiding the diagnosis from her children at first. As she put it, "I kept it from my kids for a long time. I wanted to forge ahead as a mother, and I didn't want them to worry."
Blythe sprang into action after receiving her diagnosis. She underwent three surgeries, the most recent of which was in 2020. The third surgery is the one that successfully removed all the cancerous tissue.
Blythe also revealed that she wasn't afraid of dying from the disease. As she put it, "I wasn't quaking in my boots. I don't have any fear of death at all." She attributes the death of her husband to why she was able to steadily walk into the fight against her disease.
She admitted that losing her husband of over 30 years was a huge blow. Blythe said, "You never get over that kind of loss. Bruce was the heart of our family. And life is so much paler without him around. But grief is the price we pay for love."
