There's a whole generation of people out there that grew up with the original Star Wars films. Some of them eat, sleep, and breath Star Wars in ways it would be hard to even describe. And then there's the new generation of Star Wars fan. The kids that are growing up watching Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars are often just as passionate as the generation before them.
Such is the case for 7-year-old Liam Porter who, according to the The Augusta Chronicle, emerged from a movie theater this past Saturday to see Imperial Stormtroopers making their way towards him. The young boy, who was born without a portion of his left arm, then followed the Stormtroopers to a Party Room at the theater where a man named John Peterson presented Liam with a brand new left arm and hand. Only this prosthetic appendage was special in more ways than one: It was crafted to look just like the ones on those Stormtroopers.
As you can see in the video, as soon as Liam has the prosthetic fitted onto the remaining part of his arm, he can immediately control the hand well enough to lift a plastic up.
Liam's mother Ryan told The Augusta Chronicle that he had a prosthetic several years ago, but it didn't do much for the boy.
“It didn’t really move,” she told the Chronicle. “So to a little kid it was nothing but dead weight. He did a lot without it. Every day he was saying, ‘Oh, if I had my helper arm, maybe I could do it with that. It will make a lot of little things easier.”
One of the coolest things about Porter's new Star Wars–style arm is that it was created by Peterson on a 3-D printer, which means the design can be changed much more easily, is more flexible in terms of a growing boy's needs, and it comes at a much more affordable price than traditional prosthetics.
Liam, who was also presented with an awesome Stormtrooper's helmet, was thrilled, and the video is one of the most heartwarming we've seen in a long time.
“That’s something he is going to remember for the rest of his life,” Liam's grandfather Bob Richards told the Chronicle.
And so are we, Bob. So are we.
