Stephanie Buchanan and her sister-in-law decided to spend a hot summer day in 2018 at their local public pool. They brought six kids with them, including Stephanie's 3-month-old son, Roman.
As Stephanie relaxed in the wading area of the pool in Mora, Minnesota, Roman started to fuss. She knew he was hungry, so she pulled the strap of her bathing suit down and began to nurse him as they sat in the shallow water.

Moments later, Stephanie says a female guest approached her and requested she cover up because her sons were swimming in the pool.
Then a staff member came by and instructed Stephanie to either cover up and be more discreet or go to the locker area instead.
Stephanie and her sister-in-law, who was also breastfeeding her baby, were so surprised that they didn't even have a chance to respond.
The women refused to stop nursing their children — and it wasn't long before a police officer showed up, prompting the women to take their children and go home.
According to Minnesota statute, "A mother may breast-feed in any location, public or private, where the mother and child are otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother’s breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast-feeding."
Angry and defiant, Stephanie told her story on Facebook, where it quickly went viral. Now she and other local moms from her community are fighting back in a big way.
