Divorce is hard on just about everyone it touches, even when it's the right thing to do. This can be doubly true for the children that a divorced couple shares. Fortunately, a lot of the time both parents are committed to making sure their kids pull through a divorce OK, and are making strides toward co-parenting the right way, meaning in a way that is respectful and that focuses on the children.
This can be easier said than done, especially when there are hurt feelings and even ramifications of the divorce that reverberate throughout the end of a relationship. It can't be easy to focus your energy on co-parenting with someone who has hurt you and that you might have hurt, but in relationships where the parents amicably divorce, co-parenting is a great goal to have.
There are a ton of examples of celebrities who are happily and even proudly co-parenting with their exes. From Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck to Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, here are 10 that are doing an amazing job.
1. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck famously split up in 2015, and finalized their divorce in October 2018. They have three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. They released a statement about their separation that read: "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time."
While they were separating, the two were so concerned about making sure their kids were OK that they even lived in the same home the whole time. They also still spend a lot of time together as a family these days. This couldn't have been easy, considering their divorce got pretty ugly at times, especially after it was revealed that Ben cheated on Jennifer.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin famously popularized the term "conscious uncoupling" when they split up in 2014. Their statement at the time read: "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate."
The two were mocked a little for using the term conscious uncoupling, but it's truly what they did. It's also basically the goal for co-parenting, because it just means they were both working toward being thoughtful and kind while dismantling their family. The result is that their kids seem super well-adjusted, and Chris and Gwyneth have both moved on to healthy relationships. And the best part: they are able to bring their new partners around to the whole family, including each other.
3. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
Kourtney and Scott have three kids together: Mason, Penelope, and Reign. They never married, but were a couple for a decade and basically lived as if they were married anyway. When they split up in 2015, fans of the reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians were both surprised … and totally not surprised at all. Scott regularly battled many demons on the show and was often filmed going out and partying when he would have been better off at home with his family.
A family friend explained, "Kourtney has always taken Scott back and been by his side, but now with three kids it has gotten old. Kourtney has to do what's best for the kids. Scott has been running around saying he's single. Kourtney dumped him after she saw the pics [in Monte Carlo] and he hasn't been home after a month-long party binge."
Since their breakup, it seems like Scott has really put a lot of work into being a better person in general. The two regularly vacation together with the kids, and Scott has brought his girlfriend Sofia Richie around the meet everyone as well. Kourtney and Scott have both commented on KUTWK that their relationship is much better this way, and they seem (deservedly) proud of the relationship they've now built.
4. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Mariah and Nick are mom and dad to twins Moroccan and Monroe. They separated in 2014 after being married for six years. Even though they were both sad about the split, especially Nick, the two have worked at making sure they still have a relationship as a family. Nick came out to Las Vegas to see Mariah's residency show, and the two often post holiday photos together, celebrating with their kids.
Mariah was even able to gently joke with Nick after she heard he was having a third baby. He shared that, "I don't know how she heard about it, but she called me, and she was funny with it. She was like, 'Mhm, I heard about you out here in these streets.'"
5. Courteney Cox and David Arquette
Courteney and David divorced in 2013, after 12 years of marriage. They have a daughter together, Coco.
Courteney has repeatedly said that their split was not dramatic, but that "the relationship ran its course." So it makes sense that it's been pretty easy for the two to co-parenting amicably, since they didn't have a lot of drama to begin with.
Courteney explained: "I think that we were such good friends. We found ourselves leading separate lives and just coexisting and being great friends, but not having the intimacy that … is so important in a relationship. I think you really need to work in a relationship, and I think that we tried. We're just really different, too. I'm the polar opposite of him. That can be great for a lot of things, but I need this kind of real, one-on-one connection. And I don't know. I don't know."
She also added, "I mean, as divorces go, I would say it's one of the better ones. For sure. We're good co-parents together."
6. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Reese and Ryan met when Reese was pretty young, and Ryan was a guest at her 21st birthday party. She once explained, "I met him at my 21st birthday party. I don’t know what came over me — maybe the seven Midori sours — but I told him, ‘I think you’re my birthday present.’ He thought it was so flattering, and now that I think about it … how embarrassing!"
The two quickly started dating, and they were living together by the time they filmed Cruel Intentions. They got engaged a year after they met, and Reese was pregnant with their daughter, Ava, before they got married. Whew!
So everyone was surprised when they announced their separation in 2006. The couple's representative issued a statement that read "We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time."
Ryan has since said that their age was part of the reason why they split up. He told Larry King, "When we got together we were so young. I think it can create issues with two people in this industry because there’s so much noise that goes along with it." Reese has seemed to agree with him, and she's said "I got married when I was 23 and I had two kids by the time I was 27. So I don’t know, you know, sometimes it’s good to know yourself."
However, the two have been amazing co-parents to Ava and their son, Deacon. Ryan has said that "She’s happy and remarried and our kids are incredible. I’m proud of the way we handled it and who our little people are."
7. Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom
Miranda and Orlando announced they were divorcing in 2013, following three years of marriage. The two share a son together named Flynn.
While they are very private about Flynn, they often take any opportunity they can to speak quite well of each other. In fact, Miranda even moved across the street from Orlando after they split up, so the family could keep their relationship intact.
Of their divorce, Miranda said, "It was the right thing to do. We weren’t bringing out the best in each other. There’s no hostility there, we’ll always be friends."
8. Anna Faris and Chris Pratt
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are another former couple who surprised everyone when they announced their divorce in 2018. They got married in 2009, and seemed to be in it for the long haul.
However, since their split, the two have definitely committed themselves to raising their son, Jack, together. Anna has also said of their split, "When I first got married … most women I think — I don't mean to be gender specific, maybe most people do — there's that checklist of accomplishments. It's like, get married, whatever … I think that there's that youthful [fantasy]."
She also said that she feels like it's easy to get married, but not so easy to get divorced. "The divorce untangling, it takes, you know, a year. The confusion of the simplicity of the act of getting married, which mentally you understand, 'OK, I’m making a commitment in front of people that I love to be with this person for the rest of my life, that I love,' and then it’s like, you sign a paper."
However, for all that confusion, Anna hopes that the families can all have Thanksgiving dinners together down the road. She said, "Grudge holding is not something that Chris and I do, so, we wanted to make sure, of course, that Jack was happy, but that we were happy and supportive of each other and that we could have this fantasy idea of, do we all spend Christmas together? Do we all vacation together?"
9. Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz
Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz were a major couple in the 1980s, and they have a daughter together who is a star in her own right: Zöe Kravitz. The two met in the mid-1980s, and from all accounts had an incredible relationship. Lenny said, "That woman inspired me so much. It was a magical time that she and I shared. I just opened up artistically."
While they started out as friends, they eventually started a relationship together. They eloped in 1987, and Zöe was born in 1988. The pair divorced in 1993, and also chalked up their marriage failure to being young. Lenny explained, "I think I just wasn’t ready. I had to take a break. I went through a lot of emotional things, a lot of deaths in my family."
However, both Lenny and Lisa were super committed to making sure Zöe felt as loved and secure as possible, and they've been amazing co-parents since. They even describe themselves as "best friends," and Lenny gets along really well with Lisa's husband, Jason Momoa. Lenny told Oprah, "When we’re all together now — her man, her kids, Zoë, me — we’re all together and we’re one big, happy family. It’s beautiful and it just shows you what can be done."
10. Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods
Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods had a famously troubled divorce, especially once it was revealed that Tiger had been cheating. However, they were able to agree on joint custody for their children, Charlie and Sam. Their divorce was finalized in July 2010.
The story goes that Tiger basically had a whole string of moments of pretty terrible behavior. He was open about a lot of it, but the damage was done.
Since their split, the two have really focused on getting along well for the sake of their kids. Plus, it's probably a lot nicer to have an OK relationship with your ex when children are involved. In 2016, Tiger said, "We have Sam and we have Charlie, and we love them so much that we are going to whatever it takes to make that work."
