Christina Applegate Hits 1st Award Show Since MS Diagnosis With Daughter Sadie By Her Side

This year the Critics Choice Awards took place on January 15. In attendance was actor Christina Applegate, who brought a very special person as her plus one: her 11-year-old daughter, Sadie. The mother-daughter duo looked fabulous in complementary black suits and matching shoes. This was the first award show Christina has attended since her multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

Christina was nominated for her work in the Netflix series Dead to Me. She plays Jen, a dark and twisty widow who is determined to solve her husband’s murder. This dark comedy explores grief, forgiveness, and loss.

Christina was thrilled to have Sadie as her plus one. Sadie supported her mother on her big night out. She stated that Sadie was "the best date ever” and “rad.”

Christina was open about the fact that she was anxious about the event. She tweeted: “So this Sunday will be the first awards show I have been to since 2019. And the first since MS. NERVOUS! But grateful to the @CriticsChoice for including me.”

In addition to having her daughter present for emotional support, Christina also rocked a cool manicure for good measure. The color of her nails was a deep blue, and the names Jen and Judy were written in gold. This was a touching tribute to both Christina’s character and her costar and friend Linda Cardellini.

Christina first noticed symptoms of what she later found out was MS when she was filming season one of Dead to Me. She lost her sense of balance when filming a scene involving dance. She experienced numbness and tingling in her arms and legs.

Christina opened up about her experience getting her diagnosis in an interview with the New York Times. "I wish I had paid attention. But who was I to know?" she stated.

Christina received her official MS diagnosis while she was filming the third and final season of Dead to Me. It was not an easy feat to finish the show while dealing with her new normal.

“I got diagnosed while we were working. I had to call everybody and be like, 'I have multiple sclerosis, guys. Like, what the [expletive]'” Christina revealed to Variety.

Everyone involved with the show was determined to finish the final season. Production took a five-month hiatus so Christina could receive treatments.

“And then it was about kind of learning — all of us learning — what I was going to be capable of doing,” Christina said.

Christina believes Dead to Me will be her final role in front of the camera. This makes her Critics Choice Award show appearance even more special. Watching Christina and Sadie share this moment was heartwarming.

Christina has no plans to retire from the entertainment industry. She is simply going to take on a different job title, such as producer.

"I’ve got a lot of ideas in my mind. I just need to get them executed," she mused.
