Jenni is a wife and mother from Abington, MA. Several years back, she kept a blog where she posted photos and goings-on with her family, like birthday parties and weekend events. She assumed only friends and family visited the website, so she kept it public.
One day, out of the blue, a woman emailed Jenni about her seven-month-old son, Jake, popping up on a Craigslist posting. “I think you should know someone is using Jake's picture in an adoption scam,” the email read.
At first, Jenni thought it was either a joke or that the woman who emailed her was the scammer. But lo and behold, Jenni clicked on the Craigslist post and discovered the woman was warning her. A complete stranger had gone through her blog, stole a photo of Jake, and made it look as though he was up for sale in an attempt to steal money from innocent people.
When Jenni hovered over Jake's photo, a link popped up that sent her right back to her own blog.
Furious, Jenni emailed the scammer and insisted he remove the Craigslist posting… but no response. That's when she went into mama bear mode on behalf of Jake and parents everywhere.
Jenni emailed the con artist again, this time using a fake email address. She played along, saying she was interested in adopting the boy pictured in the ad.
