Katie Canham of the UK has four children. Her first three were born with a normal amount of peach fuzz on top of their tiny heads. Nothing out of the ordinary.
When Katie was pregnant with baby No. 4, she noticed she was experiencing a particularly bad case of frequent heartburn. Many experts believe it was a sign of things to come.
According to a 2009 CBS News article, "Heartburn usually strikes in the third trimester and is due to estrogen causing the esophageal sphincter to relax, which allows stomach acid to splash up into the esophagus. Estrogen appears to be responsible for hair growth in the developing baby."
Still, no one could believe it when Dolly arrived with a full head of thick brown hair. Even the midwife was stunned by the sheer amount of hair on the baby girl's head.
By the time Dolly was 3 months old, Katie was having to trim Dolly's bangs to keep the hair out of her eyes … and it hasn't stopped growing since.
These days, her hair must be brushed on a daily basis, or else it becomes matted.
Coincidentally, Dolly's name matches her appearance perfectly — because Katie says she can't go anywhere in public without strangers mistaking the infant for a porcelain doll. "Everywhere I go, everyone says 'Oh my God, that baby's hair.'"
