The most unforgettable things in life are regrets. Regrets pester our minds and hearts for so long because we overthink what we should and shouldn't have done.
But for Jennifer Hartman, she can go on with her life knowing that what may have been a huge regret turned out to be a beautiful experience.
Hartman and Bill Reed have been together for 12 years, and were planning to have a summer wedding in 2017.
Unfortunately, end-stage liver disease was slowly taking Hartman's life as she stayed at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Physicians, Hartman's family, and caregivers met with her two weeks ago.
"We talked about how her condition wasn't going in the direction she wanted, or hoped that it would go in, and that we were looking more toward a comfort approach to her care," said Helen Papeika, Jennifer’s care coordinator. "One of the things she mentioned in that meeting as a regret was that she and Bill had never gotten married."
Several hospital staff members met with Hartman, and in about two days, they created a makeshift wedding for Reed and Hartman, right in her hospital room.
The event was officiated by Dave Simmons, chaplain for the center, and other workers helped to bring music, food, and decorations to the beautiful event.
“All we had to do was just be here, and get the marriage license,” Reed said. “We got married. A lot of crying, a lot of happiness.”
