Age is just a number for Edna Mitchell. At 87, she is Maine's oldest emergency medical technician.
Although she completed the course in 1978, Mitchell has been volunteering at the Liberty, Maine Fire Department ever since. Mitchell has seen it all, she says, from getting laboring mothers to the hospital to driving in snow in order to rescue someone in need. Her most recent run involved a vehicle accident with a driver pinned inside.
"Went around the car in the ditch to get in and hold traction on the head, but somebody else had already jumped in and was doing that," said Mitchell. "In the end I drove."
It was all in a day's work for the EMT. Mitchell refused to retire at 65 — an age many associate with the start of retirement life. She believed there was more important work to be done helping people.
It's so amazing to see people achieving amazing successes — even later in life, like this 100-year-old pianist who still performs regular gigs or 96- year-old Tao Porchon Lynch, who is the world's oldest yoga teacher!
Her dedication and love for her job has inspired two of her granddaughters and one great-granddaughter to become EMT's, too!
