Ellen DeGeneres Shares What Caused Portia De Rossi’s Emergency Hospitalization On Friday

A health scare for actress Portia de Rossi took her and wife Ellen DeGeneres for quite a ride.

Ellen shared a scary experience that saw her rush her wife of 13 years to the hospital in extreme discomfort. In her prerecorded monologue for Tuesday's episode of her talk show, Ellen put her signature humor on the serious situation.

Portia underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis after experiencing intense abdominal pain that woke her from her sleep. She'd been feeling unwell during the day Friday and went to bed early to get some rest. She's now home and recovering, but it was an emotional experience.

Ellen DeGeneres is opening up about a scary incident that happened to her wife, Portia de Rossi, on Friday. The couple were at their home in Los Angeles when Portia started feeling unwell. Ellen recalled it in her prerecorded monologue for Tuesday's episode, where she used humor to describe the scary situation.

"It started on Friday, in the evening, around 7:30," Ellen explained.

She said that she was enjoying a CBD drink with a bit of THC to unwind. Around that time of the evening, Portia said she was going to bed because she wasn't feeling well.

"And it was like 8 o'clock and that's early. I'm not used to going to bed that early. We go to bed around 8:30," she joked.

Ellen decided to take her sleep vitamins to get some rest while Portia did. She was starting to fall asleep when she heard a noise and realized Portia wasn't lying next to her. She called out to her, and Portia half-heartedly reassured Ellen she was OK.

"I get out of bed and I find Portia on the floor on all fours," she recalled.

"And I'm like, 'Baby, are you OK?' And she says, 'Yeah, I'm OK.' And I said, 'Well, you're OK if you're playing Twister by yourself, but you're not OK. You're on the floor.'"

Ellen rushed her to the ER, feeling terrible about how much pain Portia was in along the way: "I'm worried about her and I don't know what's wrong with her because, as you know, I grew up Christian Science so my best guess was, a demon?

"So they gave her a CT scan, I didn't know what that was. They said CAT scan, and I said, 'Let's leave the cat out of this.'"

The CT scan revealed inflammation, so they had to admit Portia. Because of current hospital regulations, Ellen couldn't stay with her.

"That's upsetting to me. They sent me home, and I'm crying," she admitted, before quickly adding, "because someone was chopping onions at the nurse's station."

Thankfully, doctors were able to operate on Portia quickly. Her appendix was removed, and she returned home Monday to continue her recovery.

"I am happy to report Portia is feeling much better now. She's home. She came home late yesterday," Ellen said.

"Not all of her, she left her appendix at the hospital. I'm going to auction off the appendix for charity. I'm kidding; it's gonna go on eBay."

Portia recently spoke about her and Ellen's relationship in a conversation with People magazine.

"We've grown together as a couple, and we really consider each other and put our relationship first," Portia said.

"By doing that, you become a lot more solid. I can't imagine spending time with anyone but her."

"We think the same things, say the same things at the same time, finish each other's sandwiches — no, sentences," Ellen joked.

"We're in a rhythm that's easy."
