Carter and Jack Hanson are not your average 10-year-old boys.
Unlike a lot of kids their age who are obsessed with TV, the internet, sports, or video games, these fraternal twins have a very unique interest, one that is pretty impressive for people of any age.
It all started a few years ago when the boys started playing the classic game Battleship and became enamored by military history, particularly World War II. After their parents brought them on a trip to see the legendary WWII vessel the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC, the boys said their lives changed forever. They didn't just become obsessed with the ship's history, but specifically one specific part of it, the legendary Robert Harding, who was praised for his time on the naval ship during WWII.
The boys were able to track down Harding, who is now 80 years their senior and living in Stillwater, OK, and soon became his pen pal, asking all kinds of questions about his time on the ship. It's definitely not every day you see children who have so much respect for elders and our country's history, so just learning that these two took such an interest in the 90-year-old veteran warmed my heart.
However, I completely broke down when the boys finally got to meet their hero in person. It's truly great to see young people look up to someone who actually deserves it!
