Family’s Boat Starts Sinking And Mom Follows Her Instinct To Jump Overboard

While summer may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors before the cold weather kicks in.

If you live on a lake or on a shoreline of any sort, boating is always a fun option for the whole family, as long as you exercise proper safety precautions. There's nothing like feeling the ocean breeze in your hair and getting out toward the horizon with your family on a sunny end-of-summer day.

However, sometimes you're not as prepared as you originally thought you were.

When the Emanuelson family went out on the water with their new, small sail boat, they all, of course, wore life jackets and brought a phone along with them. They weren't, however, expecting the phone to break at the worst possible time.

The family of four, with a 7-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, had taken their boat out before, but had never had trouble until this very scary moment.

The wind tipped the boat enough for water to come aboard, and Dad's phone broke when it got wet. Mom hardly thought before leaping into the water to swim four miles to get help.

One thing is for sure: this family is never going out on the water without a whistle, some flares, and other means of communication again. Mom was a real hero in this tight situation, but the family isn't going to let the scary moment ruin their future fun together.

Listen to Heather Emanuelson explain what went through her head in the moment below.
