When you were in middle school and high school, chances are there was a dress code you had to abide by. Maybe this included the color of clothes, the cut of your jeans, or how appropriate certain accessories are.
For many girls, the most difficult rule to follow is the length of dresses or skirts. Different places have different regulations. Some institutions ask that skirt length be no shorter than the tip of your fingers. Others say that knee-length is the minimum.
Many parents and students disagree with these regulations, as they're seen as policing and even sexualizing young girls' bodies by attempting to cover them. And with the new school year having just commenced, students are firing back against what they perceive are absurd rules about what they can and cannot wear.
Opelika High School in Alabama is the site of one of the latest controversies surrounding dress code violations. Many girls dressed up for homecoming, thinking that the length of their skirts was not breaking these rules.
But, as dozens of them found out at the doors, they were.
Outraged parents are also horrified. For some of these girls, like Hunter Grace Niswender, homecoming was their first dance.
Several mothers of these girls have posted photos, challenging followers and the school to see how "inappropriate" these dresses are — and are now calling for a change to the rules.

Mom Kathy Keith Niswender was appalled and dismayed when her young teenage daughter Hunter Grace came home from the homecoming dance before it had even started.

She, along with dozens of other girls, were turned away at the school's doors because their dresses were deemed to be "too short."

The policy that night? Skirts must reach the knees.

However, Hunter Grace was confused: She had worn that same dress to school earlier in the week, and there didn't seem to be a problem. The school claims that it still has to update its policy.

Along with Hunter Grace, Cody Sellers King's daughter, Sydney, was also turned away for wearing a blue dress that looked to almost reach her knees, but not quite.

Destiney Marie Laro posted a picture of her sister, who chose to wear her church dress to homecoming. The dress was also deemed "too short" and the girl was forced to go home.
