Jason Momoa is a lot of things — he's one of the many breakout stars from Game of Thrones, he's Aquaman, and he's also a loving father and husband. But sometimes, as a parent in high demand, it can be difficult to fulfill multiple roles at once.
And that's why Jason always carries reminders of his kids while he travels. He has two with wife Lisa Bonet — Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa and Lola Iolani Momoa.
While Jason and Lisa only got married in 2017, they've been a couple for much longer. They've been together for 12 years, and it's fairly obvious that Lisa is the love of his life.
"If someone says something isn't possible, I'm like, 'Listen here, I married Lisa Bonet,'" he told Esquire back in 2019. He admitted that he had a crush on Lisa long before they met.
In an interview with GQ, he admitted that his kids' beloved stuffed animals travel with him when he's far away from home. That way, a piece of them is still close by.
"If you have babies, you know you got stuffed animals, and if you're not with your babies and you're gonna be cuddling stuffed animals," he said.
Potato is a stuffed bull who represents his son Wolf, while Piggy Big Spirit — a cute white pig — is for Lola. He didn't want to share too many intimate stories about how Potato and Piggy Big Spirit became part of their family, but it seems like they mean as much to Jason as they do to his kids.
"It's all about Potato and Piggy Big Spirit," he said. "Wolfie just got this amazing character and he called it Potato and I thought it was the most genius name for a stuffed animal!" As he spoke about the stuffed animals, you could tell they really meant a lot to him.
And he did confirm that, yes, they both sleep in bed with him when he's traveling. "Got to have Pig and Potato," he said. Even by watching the short clip, you can tell he's a very passionate father and cares a lot about his two kids. Jason also has a stepdaughter, Zoë Kravitz, from Lisa's previous marriage to Lenny Kravitz.
Another thing that the video revealed was Jason's stance on plastic. To put it briefly, he hates it — and sees a lot of it while he travels.
"It's not good for you, it's not good for the Earth" he said. And he has a point. That's why he travels with products that he can always reuse.
"When you travel as much as I do, it's just like there's that single use plastic everywhere," he said. "I just get tired of it and so I wanted to not [expletive] about it I wanted to do stuff about it." That's not the only environmentally friendly statement he made in the video — he also talked about how he crafts his own chain wallets.
On his Instagram, he's also promoted biodegradable flip-flops and environmentally friendly sneakers. "The Unity Purple and Yaya Lavender Roamers feature an organic cotton upper, @bloomfoam algae insoles with a top layer of cork, and biodegradable outsoles," he said on Instagram, holding a few pairs. "We're all in this together."
While they likely don't bring quite as much comfort as Potato and Piggy Big Spirit, the shoes and bottles are likely a nice reminder that he's doing everything he can to save the environment. It's also sweet to know that he's passing on his environmental ways to his kids, so that they have a safe and clean place to grow up.
Jason's sweet and loving connection with his kids is extra special, as Jason grew up without a father figure in his life. So he wanted to make sure he was always there when Lola and Wolf needed him. "I didn't know what it takes to be a dad." he said, per ET Canada. "And I don't want to just tell my son, 'Because I said so.' I really want to connect, and I want him to be vulnerable and open."
Jason even vulnerably admitted that it was rough for him after his notable gig on Game of Thrones. While he suddenly had become a household name, it was hard for him to find roles.
"I mean, we were starving after ‘Game Of Thrones.’" he said. "I couldn't get work. It's very challenging when you have babies and you're completely in debt."
He also admitted in another interview that his kids changed his perspective on his own life. "When I became a father, it changed my life because it really made me learn to take care of myself," he said, per PhilStar. "Prior to that, I didn't give too much thought to that. Everything’s to live for after you have babies. I've never learned more in my life by having children."
It seems like Jason has such a genuine relationship with his kids. One day, maybe they can hit the road with him instead of their stuffed animal stand-ins. But for now, it seems like the actor has found the best way to balance his career and his family life.
