Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband, Justin Mikita, have welcomed their first child together. The couple have happily announced they have a new baby boy, named Beckett Mercer Ferguson-Mikita. Beckett was born on July 7, 2020.
Jesse's representative confirmed the news to People, saying, "Jesse and Justin welcomed their little bundle of joy Beckett Mercer Ferguson-Mikita on July 7, 2020. The new parents are overjoyed and excited for this new journey as a family of three."
Jesse first told the public that he and his husband were expecting a baby in January 2020 while on The Late Late Show With James Corden. He said, "This is something I haven't even mentioned to anyone, if we could just keep it between the three of us and you all, but I'm actually expecting a baby in July with my husband."
He also added that at age 44, he was ready. "I'm very excited, but it feels like I'm 44 now, let's get this show going. Tick tock."
Jesse and Justin hosted a baby shower in February to celebrate their baby boy. Most of Jesse's costars from the show were present. Jesse and Justin have been married since 2013. Their ceremony took place in downtown New York City.
Jesse also shared that he proposed to Justin back in 2012. The two had been dating for two years before the proposal.
Jesse and Justin have kept a lot of the details about their relationship to themselves, but they do happily share updates about their lives together on Instagram.
The pair similarly did not make a big deal about their baby shower. Jesse said, "Justin and I did NOT want a baby shower but we are so glad we gave in! Thank you to all of our friends who showed up to celebrate our growing family. In lieu of gifts we asked our guests to make donations to @nokidhungry. They do amazing work getting meals to hungry children. If you feel inclined, check out their page to learn more about them! Can't wait to go on this adventure with you @justinmikita!"
However, the pair did give an interview to Variety together, and they shared that they met at the gym. Jesse said, "We were both in the locker room, fully clothed. I was leaving."
Justin had just seen the pilot for Modern Family, and he stopped Jesse to chat about the show. Jesse added, "I was taken by how handsome he was and how sweet. I started asking questions about him, and I think he was sort of thrown off by that and ran away from me."
They started chatting on Twitter, and Jesse asked if he could take Justin out. Justin was actually in a relationship, and he told Jesse so. "I was like, 'Full disclosure: I'm in a relationship, but I'd love to get a drink with you as a friend.' And he said, 'I have enough friends,' which I loved." They ran into each other again 10 months later, but this time Justin was single.
Justin and Jesse began planning their wedding after marriage equality passed in the US in 2013. Jesse offered a few details about the ceremony, saying, "Justin and I both walked down the aisle — basically two separate aisles — at the same time, being ushered by both our parents, and then met at the altar together, where Tony Kushner was standing to marry us, which was insane for me because he's such an idol of mine."
