Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from her husband of seven years in June 2020, and it took a long time for the details to be worked out.
One reason the proceedings took so long was because Kelly put up a fight.
Kelly had hoped to retain all rights to the pair's ranch in Montana and sell it. Unfortunately for her, she ended up having to give her ex 5.12% of the ranch after a judge ruled in August 2021 that he could stay there as long as he can pay the upkeep required.
A source revealed that Kelly was intent on making sure she was not required to give anything else unless ordered by a judge. While working closely with attorney Laura Wasser, Kelly focused nearly all of her free time on the trial.
Kelly was reportedly totally against reaching a settlement. As a source told Us Weekly, "She will not even entertain the idea of settling with Brandon. He will not get one penny from her that isn’t ordered by the judge. It’s going to be nasty."
In December 2021, Kelly tried to have her estranged husband evicted from the Montana ranch they once both called home. At the time, Us Weekly spoke to a source close to the situation, who explained, "Kelly recently had a major legal setback in a bid to get Brandon evicted from the Montana property that the judge awarded solely to her."
The source continued, "He has been living in it and said he doesn’t have the financial means to afford to purchase a residence of his own at this time, citing the unresolved financial aspect of their divorce."
It's not too surprising that Kelly herself had no interest in living on the ranch, particularly as it sounded as though it was the setting for many of the problems between herself and Brandon. The family of four were quarantining in Montana at the beginning of the health crisis, and their problems really ballooned there.
As the source continued to Us Weekly, "They clashed on so many levels and being in quarantine together heightened their problems to the point of no return."
Finally, an agreement was reached in March 2022. Kelly was ordered to pay her ex more than $1.3 million, as well as monthly payments of $115,000 in spousal support until January 31, 2024. She also must pay $45,601 monthly in child support for their two young children, River Rose and Remington Alexander.
The two share joint legal custody of their kids.
