Kensington Palace has released a rare statement in response to a style controversy regarding Kate Middleton’s desire for the public to focus on her work rather than her wardrobe.
A palace spokesperson on clarified to People magazine that a new directive about the palace’s information on Kate’s outfits did not come from the royal herself.
“Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales’s clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits,” the representative said in a statement. “To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales.”

The spokesperson was referencing “Princess of Wales: Focus on my work, not my wardrobe,” an article published in The Sunday Times on February 1, 2025, in which it was stated Kensington Palace would stop publicly releasing details about Kate’s outfits.
“The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales,” the palace noted. “To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness’s clothing.”
The Times article was published weeks after Kate announced she’s in remission from cancer, diagnosed early last year. In January 2024, Kate took a much-discussed departure from the public eye due to a planned abdominal surgery.
In March, she announced her diagnosis and announced in September that she’d completed chemotherapy.
