Mom Can’t Afford A Crib For Her New Baby, So She Puts Her In A Box Instead

For many new parents, the high cost of baby supplies can be overwhelming.

There are so many items to purchase, and they don't come cheap. From the bigger things like cribs and dressers to the many small items likes diapers, bottles, and clothes, there is seemingly no end to the list of things that a newborn needs.

While there are ways to budget and make these purchases in a smart way, it still amounts to more than most people have at the ready.

Now New Mexico nonprofit organization Many Mothers is stepping in to relieve this burden for local families — and maybe even save some lives.

They recently put together nearly 30 baby boxes to distribute to low-income families in the area who just welcomed newborns. The boxes include a few supplies for the baby, but the box itself is the point of interest here.

These cardboard boxes come equipped with a baby mattress and are to be used in place of a bassinet or a crib.

While this may seem crazy to a lot of parents, the lack of bedding and blankets is actually safer for the baby as it reduces the risk of the child being smothered or otherwise harmed while sleeping.

This practice has been used overseas for quite some time, and has even been linked to a decrease in infant death rates.
