Malia Obama Is All Grown Up: 22-Year-Old Lands First Job As A Writer On New Amazon Series

It's hard to believe just how grown up the Obama girls are. The former first daughters were just little girls when their father made history as the United States' first Black president.

Fast-forward all these years, and now they're impressive women working on their own futures. Malia Obama is now 22 years old and a senior at Harvard University, while Sasha is 19 years old and a sophomore at the University of Michigan.

Malia is making headlines for scoring her very first job. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Donald Glover signed an eight-figure deal with Amazon for content curation and development. Among the projects that will be developed is Hive, which will follow a "Beyoncé-like figure" and her massive fan base. We've learned Malia will be one of the writers on the show.

Malia Obama has been working on her career in the entertainment industry for some time. She first got her start back in 2015, when she started an internship for HBO. The internship led to her working on the set of a show she loved, Girls.

Showrunner Lena Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner opened up about Malia's time on the set in an interview with Howard Stern in 2017.

"She's an angel," Lena said.

"She was interested and she was interning at HBO and they thought what if she comes a couple days a week to the set of Girls. She loved the show, and I mean, obviously we weren't like making her go get our coffee. You're not going to send [the president’s daughter to get coffee]. But she wanted to do all the jobs. That was the cool thing. She was totally enthusiastic."

"We were sort of training her to do what our writer's assistant did," Jenni added.

"There's a job where you sit on the set and — we do a lot of improv — so you take down the improv so we can get it in the next shot. We had one of our people who did that train her to do that."

Shortly before starting Harvard, Malia also interned for The Weinstein Company at its New York City office. There were talks of Malia working in marketing or development in the spring 2017 semester, but information about the internship all but disappeared after Harvey Weinstein's history of sex crimes was exposed later that year, leading to his arrest and conviction.

Malia's major at Harvard is unknown, but it's clear she's still interested in the entertainment industry. Recently, it was announced that Malia will be one of the writers on one of the new projects Donald Glover is working on for Amazon. He recently penned an eight-figure deal with Amazon for content development and production.

The series Malia will work on is called Hive. The project, exclusively for Amazon Prime, will follow a "Beyoncé-like public figure" and what it's like being larger-than-life. Malia certainly has some experience to draw from in that respect.

It's unclear if Malia will work on other Donald Glover projects, but he has quite a bit in the pipeline. It was also recently announced he's working with Phoebe Waller-Bridge on an update on Mr. & Mrs. Smith, in the form of a series. It's set to air on Amazon next year.

Malia will graduate Harvard in spring 2022 if all goes well. Surely, this is just another early step in what's sure to be a fascinating career for her. Between this and her long-term romance with boyfriend Rory Farquharson, it seems like the 22-year-old is living her best life.
