Having a child with a developmental disability would be a challenge for any parent. Moms and dads cope with the difficulties of raising a child with special needs in different ways.
For example, many work to raise awareness that these children are really just like other kids without disabilities. They are special, but not because of what others perceive as a flaw.
But one mother is working on a smaller scale to raise this kind of awareness.
Jo Ann Briseno sees the beauty in everyday life. Having a daughter with Down syndrome has taught her to value the big and small milestones.
In fact, she records each one on a small napkin. She draws scenes with her daughter, Maya, on them every morning before school, then packs them in her lunch box so she can find them later in the day.
So far, Briseno has drawn 471 of these small sketches that mean so much to her, her daughter, and other parents with children like Maya.
The art may not be the finest out there, but they are meaningful, and they come from the heart. Every parent can appreciate the way this mom is recording her daughter's milestones in such a touching and personal way.
