Video Shows Moment Mom & Daughter Reunite After Mom Vanished 24 Years Ago To ‘Live Secret Life’

When it comes to suffering, it really isn’t fair to judge one situation as harder than another. That being said, I think those who lose a loved one to a sudden death grieve differently from a family left in the wake of a loved one’s disappearance. The finality of one is devastating, and the uncertainty of the other has to be torturous. There isn’t a “better” one to experience, but I think not knowing for sure would be particularly hard.

Sometimes, even the reappearance of that said loved one can be fraught. I certainly don’t know if I could act with as much grace as Amanda Hundley, who’s mother, Michele Lyn Hundley Smith, resurfaced after disappearing without a trace 24 years ago and reportedly did so of her own free will.

Hundley Smith, now 62, first went missing in 2001.

The North Carolina mom was 38 at the time and left her husband and 19-, 14-, and 8-year-old-kids to go “Christmas shopping” at a Kmart in Virginia, according to an earlier report by the New York Post. Her disturbing and abrupt disappearance caused agencies across the two states as well as FBI officials “hours” of investigations, pursuing leads for years.

Secretly, the mom of three walked out on her family of her own accord, just casually leaving an insurmountable number of questions in her wake.

Rockingham County Officials reportedly found her ‘alive and well’ in February 2026.

“At her request, her current whereabouts will remain undisclosed,” the sheriff’s office said in the statement they released via Facebook. “Her family has been notified that she has been located and informed of this request as well.”

Her relatives had a variety of reactions to the news, mixing relief with a lot of questions now that she’s been located.

“I kind of want to go outside and scream, ‘She’s alive, she’s alive,’” Smith’s cousin Barbara Byrd told WFMY.

“My biggest question is to her… what happened all those years ago in December? What made you leave? What happened?” Byrd added. “I never thought Michele was dead. I knew she was alive. It’s just a feeling that I had my whole life.”

Her motive for leaving has not been revealed publicly.

As for her daughter Amanda, who was 14 at the time of the disappearance, she’s just glad to have her mother back in her life.

The Post caught their tearful reunion outside a North Carolina courthouse where Hundley Smith was appearing over a charge for the DWI arrest that happened prior to her disappearance. The two had been corresponding before that, and the mom knew her daughter was going to be there.

Despite it causing years of distress, her daughter is adamant that she has forgiven her absentee mother. “Life’s so short … I’m not going to hold any grudge. Stuff happens,” Amanda shared.

Shortly after her mother was found, however, Amanda did issue an update on Facebook on behalf of her father, stating that he wished to be left alone by the media and others at this time.

Her friends and followers were in awe of her strength and resilience. “Amanda you are incredibly strong, never forget that. You have been so strong and determined through out all of this,” wrote one of her followers on her update post.

“My heart goes out to you and your family during this emotional time. I’m beyond thrilled that your mom has been found, and I’m sending you all my best wishes for a happy and healthy reunion,” added another commenter.
