For over 50 years, the Barbie doll has been the gold standard in girls' dolls. Introduced in 1959, it quickly became a staple in toy boxes around the globe. But recently Barbie has been the subject of much controversy, with criticism that she promotes an unrealistic body image for young girls.
Enter the Lammily Doll.
Created by Nickolay Lamm, the more realistically proportioned Lammily doll could be described as the anti-Barbie. Modeled using measurements of the average 19-year-old American woman, she is meant to reflect ordinary life. She is fit and wears minimal makeup and is even offered with a line of stick-on accessories such as acne, scars, cellulite, and stretch marks.
Like this woman who gives dolls a make-under by removing their makeup to show their natural beauty, Lamm wants to teach kids that "average is beautiful." With all of the pressure placed on young girls to look a certain way, it's nice to finally see some alternatives.
To see how kids would respond to such a doll, they went to a private school and asked the children their opinion of Lammily compared to other dolls. Their answers are funny, heartwarming, and inspiring!
We love the idea, but what do you think of the Lammily dolls? Let us know in the comments.
