In January 2023, at a Safe Haven baby drop-off box in Ocala, Florida, the only one of its kind in the entire state, a newborn baby was surrendered at the box, becoming the first infant to be left at one of these safe haven public spots.
Six months later, News4JAX The Local Station provides a happy update on the baby girl who was dropped off at the Safe Haven box, and how she is doing with her adoptive family.
According to the news outlet, the temperature-controlled box located at Fire Station 1 in Ocala, Florida, is set up to sound an alarm to first responders once a baby is placed inside. Within moments of being dropped off, the baby girl, whose name is now Zoe, was in the arms of a firefighter with dreams of becoming a dad.
The first responder and his wife’s identity have been omitted for their family’s protection, but the couple had been trying to start their own family through adoption for a number of years, only to have it fall through every single time.
When little Zoe practically landed on their doorstep, they felt like it was a sign.
“Everybody was just in disbelief. Honestly, that she was hand-delivered to us … and that everything had kind of worked itself out to where we could bring her home two days later,” Zoe’s adoptive mother explains.
