It's hard for any family when the parent has to be away from the child. I remember my mother crying the first time she sent me to camp — and that was just one week!
Imagine how hard it is for parents who serve our country in the armed forces when their deployments keep them away from their loved ones for months at a time.
I always tear up when I see our brave soldiers and officers surprising their families when they return home. The first one that comes to mind is a video of one veteran surprising his family with an entire flashmob. You can really see how much that dad loves his kids.
Of course, many mothers are serving in the armed forces as well. It's equally difficult — and some might even argue it's harder — for these mothers with a job that keeps them from their kids for months at a time.
Catherine Kelly is a mother of 5-year-old Brianna, and she also serves in the US Navy where she has been stationed in Bahrain for the past six months.
Catherine told her local news station, WSCO Channel 9, "It's been rough, being away from your family members, especially your kids. [You've] got to think that you do this for your family and it's your job."
Recently, Catherine shocked Brianna with a surprise visit to her school. Brianna thought her classmates were just lining up to get their school photos taken, so she had no idea she'd be seeing her mother that day. Her reaction is absolutely priceless and has me in tears.
