Janeth Santos couldn't believe what she was hearing. Screams of help coming from her next door neighbor. The 13-year-old rushed over. That's when she saw the neighbor's 4-year-old son, Josh turning blue.
“I went to see what happened, and she asked me if I knew any medical things,” Santos said.
Santos quickly realized what was going on. She recognized the signs of choking and figured out that something must be stuck in his throat. That's when she saw a piece of candy in his mouth.
Using her finger, Santos pulled it out. She saved his life. Santos shows us the importance of knowing what to do when someone is choking and how to spot the signs.
“To be honest, I was really nervous,” Santos said. By the time paramedics arrived, Josh was fine. The emergency responders were so proud of Santos they told her school district about it. Santos learned CPR during a class at school.
The teen was recognized for her bravery and quick-thinking by the entire school district. Her principal hopes that other students will learn that they can apply what they're taught in school to real life situations.
“I hope other kids learn from that and really take their studies seriously,” Prinicipal Marlene Bicondoba said.
