Scott and Amy Kehoe wanted one thing: to become parents. After eight years of marriage, two miscarriages, and five failed rounds of IVF, a surrogate seemed like the only solution.
The Michigan couple chose experienced surrogate and mother of four, Shelley Baker. Shelley carried the embryos and gave birth to a beautiful set of twins.
However, when Shelley went to court with the couple to legalize the adoption, she discovered Amy had mental health issues and had previously been arrested for cocaine possession.
Although Amy's psychiatrist swore that she had been mentally stable for nine years, Shelley didn't feel comfortable giving the twins to a mother she believed to be unstable and kept the two children.
Like the time a surrogate decided to keep the child instead of aborting as the adoptive parents requested, this is one mother making a judgment call.
"I felt irresponsible as a mother. You know, as a surrogate," Shelley said. "Because I stood in front of the judge, while listening to this woman tell about her psychotic disorder, and her anxiety, and the pills she has to take and the criminal history."
Because Michigan law favors the birth mother, Shelley was allowed to keep the twins.
