There are some very special kinds of magic that you experience as a child that are sacred. One of those is the magic of a snow day.
For a kid, there's nothing like waking up to find a winter wonderland outside your window. For generations, kids have clamored to their radios, TVs, and, today, their laptops and tablets to find out if their school is closed for the day. If they get so lucky, they get to enjoy a spontaneous day with nothing to do. What's better, if weather conditions permit, they can go out and play in the snow.
It's one of the sweetest deals a kid gets, but it's in jeopardy. See, the widespread implementation of remote learning measures have made it easy for many kids to learn from home. So in theory, there's no real reason to cancel school.
Except for the sacredness of the snow day — which is what Campbell's is arguing for. The soup company has created a campaign to "Save the Snow Day." It's asking people to sign a pledge to keep the cherished winter tradition alive. In honor of that, here are some ideas for ways to keep your snow days filled with fun and magic.
Campbell's is saving the snow day. The soup company launched the "Save the Snow Day" campaign to keep the practice from going extinct in the age of remote learning.
"Following a difficult year for so many, it is so important to find those moments of comfort and joy," says Linda Lee, chief marketing officer of Meals & Beverages at the Campbell Soup Company.
Campbell's is asking people to sign the pledge to keep the snow day alive.
"The excitement of waking up to a snow day delights kids and adults alike. These are special days filled with sledding and snowman building, capped off with a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup after playing in the cold," Linda noted.
"Even in the virtual world we find ourselves in need of a good 'ol snow day."
The first 3,000 people to sign the pledge are in for a treat. They'll receive a snowman-making kit featuring a large wooden carrot, coal, and oversized buttons. They'll also score a signature red-and-white hat and scarf and goldenrod mittens. Then there's the limited-edition Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup stackable snowman cans and the "Save the Snow Day" window cling.
With snow starting to crop up in the forecast around the country, we came up with a few fun ideas to enrich your snow days and remind you why the tradition must stay.
Do a Puzzle
When the winds are still whipping and it's coming down hard, it's not quite time for outdoor play. While you wait it out, work on a puzzle. It's one of those activities you often don't feel like you have the time for, but you'll never be disappointed if you take the time to do one. Make it a family effort for extra fun.
Make Hot Chocolate
Watching the snow fall while drinking hot chocolate is an essential part of a snow day. Depending on how your day goes, it can be a midday treat, or you might save it for when you come in from playing outside. Don't be afraid to indulge with marshmallows, whipped cream, and any other toppings you love!
Try a Real Snow Cone
Eating snow cones made with real snow is a (only slightly gross) rite of passage every kid should enjoy at least once. Simply add some sugar and food coloring to have a nice frozen treat. My Mini Adventurer shares her tips for the perfect snow cone.
Go Sledding or Tubing
If you've got somewhere nearby where you can enjoy sledding or tubing, it's every reason for your family to get outside. Memories made in these settings are some of the greatest ones kids have. Whether they're old enough to go with their own friends or still need some guidance from you, they'll have a blast and tire themselves out good.
Have a Snowball Fight
A snowball fight between the family is seriously a blast. If you can safely get neighbors and friends involved, the more, the merrier! Kids both big and small will love mastering the art of the perfect snowball.
Build a Snowman
If you've never given it a sincere shot, you may not know this, but building a snowman is hard work! It's exhausting but rewarding in all the best ways. It's also a nice opportunity for teamwork amongst your kiddos.
Bake Cookies
The smell of freshly baked goods filling your home on a snow day is too tempting to resist. Don't put up a fight this year, and make a simple treat with your kids. Cookies and brownies are particularly satisfying to snack on as the snow falls.
