Traditionally speaking, it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress before the big day. In fact, some people think it's bad luck for the couple to see each other at all before the ceremony.
Bridal Guide explains that this superstition originated from medieval times when arranged marriages were pretty much the only marriages. They were arranged to unite two families (and their assets), more so than two people.
Therefore, the couple wasn't allowed to see one another until the ceremony to avoid a scenario in which the groom didn't like what he saw and changed his mind.
Today, some couples keep the tradition, but others decide to capture the emotional moment the groom sees the bride for the first time by taking "first-look photos."
Obviously, most brides opt to wear their wedding gown in such photos. However, Erin Goldberg decided to mix things up for her wedding and prank her husband-to-be by wearing sweatpants instead.
For most brides, this photo would involve something a little lighter in color and, well, more bridal.
However, 25-year-old teacher Erin Goldberg definitely isn't like most brides.
Erin's husband, Ean, had no idea that he was the one who'd appear overdressed for these photos.
Of course, he couldn't be blamed for expecting a certain dress code the moment he turned around.
As perhaps expected, Ean's first look was one full of laughter.
Other brides probably want tears, but a big grin was exactly what Erin was looking for.
She tells People, "I mess with him all the time, and I thought it was a really good opportunity for me to prank him, because I don’t dress up very often."
To make matters even more hilarious, Erin explains, "We had been talking about this [wedding] dress and how excited he was to see me in the dress."
Erin couldn't wait for Ean to turn around and see her in what she describes as her "stupid cat shirt."
It can't be the first time he's seen it, and it certainly wasn't a deal breaker then — or now.
The shoot was fun for the couple, but also for their photographer, Molly McElenney, who shared the photos on Facebook, saying, "Is it just me or do I get to work with the coolest couples ever?"
Erin may have a good sense of humor, but she also has a good sense of style and decided against wearing her "stupid cat shirt" down the aisle.
When she got into her wedding dress, the couple took more traditional photos that are (almost) as adorable as the sweatpants version.
