Tinder can be a strange place — and that's putting it as mildly as possible.
Men and women all over the planet decide to spark potentially romantic conversations based on a few carefully selected selfies and a short bio, usually full of one-liners and emojis and lies about their height. Needless to say, there is a lot of room for error. Often a user will match with someone and quickly realize that, for one reason or another, this is not someone they're interested in at all.
Such seems to be the case for Hannah, who matched with a boy named Patrick and quickly decided that she wasn't interested in romance — she just wanted to have a little fun at his expense.
Hannah knew the match wouldn't work out, but Patrick kept asking for her phone number. Instead of telling him no, Hannah somehow managed to convince him that they actually had the same number!
Hannah shared the story on social media, where it promptly gained a huge response — both positive and negative. Here's why:
All right, like we said, there are a lot of mixed emotions here. This is absurd and hysterical, but c'mon, Patrick… don't be so gullible!
Patrick is buying this story hook, line, and sinker. We're not sure how old these two are, but has anyone in their life ever heard of identical phone numbers?
Hannah brings it home with a fair amount of foul language and disbelief, and Patrick's final message is actually kind of heartbreaking.
Hannah was hailed as a hero by some.
Credit where it's due: She did sell that lie pretty convincingly.
The now-viral thread even caught the attention of some big-time Twitter users.
And just about everyone who reads it is having a laugh at Patrick's expense today.
But there are some critics out there:
Many are pointing out that Hannah was being unnecessarily cruel here.
They have a point — if the other party has done nothing rude or wrong and you're not interested, why waste their time with a (pretty funny) prank?
Turns out, Hannah did actually end up texting Patrick.
Likely in a scheme for more retweets, Hannah kept her game going.
Looks like she and Patrick did end up chatting after all.
(Although for you conspiracy theorists out there, if you look very closely at this screenshot, you can see evidence at the top of the text chain that these two had already been talking before this "random" exchange.)
Opinons remained mixed on Hannah's actions.
Some don't like the hypocrisy of toying with a boy only to message him later.
Others are accusing their friends of being just as gullible as poor old Patrick.
But the vast majority are shouting out props to Hannah — what's wrong with a prank every now and again?
