Tori Spelling is used to mommy shamers coming at her. There have been a number of times she's slammed commenters for questioning her parenting and her children's well-being.
This time, Tori is the one apologizing. The 46-year-old actress recently posted a picture of 8-year-old daughter Hattie to her Instagram stories. In the photo, Hattie has a teal bandana on her head. She also has Cheetos attached to her fingers. "Days kept inside we have to get creative," Tori captioned the image. "Hattie has become McQuisha in her Cheeto extension nails!"
Many people were offended by what they felt Tori insinuated with the photo. They particularly felt McQuisha to be an insensitive nickname. A number of commenters frankly believed it to be a negative commentary on and mockery of black people. They were concerned that this was what she felt was appropriate to convey with a photo of her child.
Tori offered an explanation behind the photo and explained that although there was a reason, she still should have better understood how it would have been perceived.
Tori Spelling is typically standing up for her family against the criticism of mommy shamers and online trolls. This time, the actress recognizes that she's in the wrong. A post that the 46-year-old mom of five shared to her Instagram stories landed her in hot water, accused of being a racist.
Earlier this week, Tori shared a picture of her 8-year-old daughter, Hattie. Like so many moms, it was a look at what life's like with the kids at home amid the coronavirus pandemic. The photo showed Hattie with a teal bandana on and Cheetos attached to her fingers with rubber bands, simulating long nails.
"Days inside we have to get creative," Tori captioned the image. "Hattie has become McQuisha in her Cheeto extension nails!"
The photo did not sit well with many in the black community, who slammed Tori as a racist.
"Racism takes no days off even during a pandemic," noted one Twitter user who was offended by Tori's post. "@torispelling why did you think this was ok ?!?!?! Let me guess 'ignorance and you’re so so sorry.'"
Indeed, Tori did end up apologizing when she saw the error of her ways. "I posted a story the other day that upset many of you. I'm truly sorry," she began. "That was NOT the intention at ALL. Hattie is 8. We watch and adore old reruns of Martin."
"She loves the character Shanaynay," Tori continued. "She made up that name with "Mc" bc her last name is McDermott. She was reenacting the over the top fun and amazing character from Martin. She is innocent and I didn't mean anything by it."
"I should have thought about how it could have been perceived and misconstrued before I posted," Tori recognized. "I did not. I'm truly sorry."
There were mixed reactions to Tori's apology, just like the original picture.
"If this offended someone they must be a miserable boring person!" wrote one commenter. "We gotta stop being so sensitive!!! We want them to leave our art alone but then want to be acknowledged /celebrated/ supported at the same time … "
"Why do I feel like Hattie legit enjoys Martin and Shenehneh though?" another commenter said. She believed Tori's explanation was genuine but went on to note that Tori was wrong in the situation. "Still Tori, ya gots ta be mo careful!"
The Instagram story was just one of many since Tori and her family have been home. Days earlier, she complained on Instagram about the toilet paper shortage. Like so many others, the panic around coronavirus left her family scrambling for supplies after striking out at several stores.
"We're all sick and the kids' schools are closed, so we're all home," she noted. "And it's raining. And the stores are out of toilet paper and we have seven butts to wipe and no toilet paper to be found."
Later, she praised her "rockstar" husband, Dean McDermott, for finally finding toilet paper.
As hectic as having all five kids home may be, it may also prove to be a break for Tori and Dean. Last month, Tori took to Instagram to share her frustrations after her children cycled through several schools and continued having issues with being bullied. Her heartfelt post resonated with many parents who have dealt with the difficult issue.
"Between her last year at her elementary school or the 1st year at her middle school, this human has endured enough bullying for a lifetime," Tori shared about oldest daughter Stella. She went on to explain that Stella has been blamed as the cause of her own bullying. She's even been sexually harassed by male students.
Of oldest son Liam, she slammed administrators who dismissed him as "lazy."
"He was bullied to the point that he developed severe emotional based headaches and stomach aches," Tori said.
She felt that she'd done everything she could and still couldn't help her kids. Hopefully, this time with her family provides clarity to that situation and peace to her children.
