Drug addiction not only affects the person addicted, but also his or her loved ones. Hearts are broken every single day because of the destruction left in addiction's wake.
After getting hooked on prescription pain pills at an early age, Gabi turned to heroin at just 16 years old. Gabi was raised by her grandparents — Barry, a retired police officer, and his wife, Carol — but it wasn't until she overdosed on a street corner that they learned the extent of her issues. "I never thought that being completely sober was ever going to be part of my life," Gabi told WCPO.
Barry and Carol signed their granddaughter up for an outpatient treatment program, but it failed to work. From there, things only got worse for the troubled teen. Gabi dropped out of college and beauty school, gave away her grandparent's car, and ripped off drug dealers. And then, at the age of 20, she hit rock bottom. Gabi stole more than $8,000 worth of Carol's jewelry, which she pawned for more drugs.
Frustrated and heartbroken, Gabi's grandparents then made a "tough love" decision that may surprise you. They turned her into the police, making this Gabi's fourth arrest. But instead of having her thrown in jail, Barry persuaded the judge to send Gabi to a long-term treatment program.
