Tristan Thompson Gets Temporary Guardianship Over 17-Year-Old Brother After Mother’s Death

NBA star Tristan Thompson was recently granted temporary guardianship of his younger brother, Amari Thompson. This follows the sudden death of their mother, Andrea, who died in January 2023.

The Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, granted the basketball player temporary guardianship, though he had initially requested sole legal guardianship over the 17-year-old on September 8. The court's ruling allows Tristan “all powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have," according to court documents.

Amari has epilepsy, along with other medical conditions, that require him to receive around-the-clock support. Tristan claimed that their father, Trevor Thompson, had been absent from his brother's life since 2014. He also claimed that he was the closest living family member.

Tristan was also granted authority to “manage ward’s finances and assets, travel with the ward within the United States of America and internationally, enroll ward in social and other extracurricular activities, decide living arrangements of the ward [and] obtain legal counsel on behalf of the ward," according to the official court documents.
