It was a tragedy. Erin Harris, mother of two, was running the Geist Half Marathon in Fishers, IN. The mother was struck by a school bus that hit her and kept going.
Six days later, Erin died from her injuries, leaving behind her beloved husband, Jess, and two young children.
“There isn’t a day in my life that goes by that I don’t think about her,” Jess told WRTV. “She is always on my mind.”
The loss has, understandably, been traumatic for the family. Jess has stuck closely to his faith to cope with the loss of his wife.
"We were very close, so when this happened… I encountered losing a wife, lover, best friend, a house mate,” Jess said. “The layers of loss are incredible."
After Erin's funeral, Jess received a mysterious package in the mail. It was anonymous. Inside was a note and a medal. All the person said was that they finished the half-marathon the day Erin was in the car accident.
“‘It is a small thing to send and offer my sympathy for the loss of your loved one, a fellow runner,’" the note says.
The medal was from the Geist Half Marathon, and the sender wanted Erin's family to have it. It was a small gesture, but a much-needed restoration of faith that there are kind people out there.
Jess said: “I’d like to say thank you. This is a good addition to memorializing her memory and her life. This is a medal she wanted to get, and I’m glad we have it."
