Independence Day is right around the corner, so start summer off with a bang! Make some fun 4th of July crafts with your kids that you can display and enjoy as you wait for those fireworks! Making crafts together is a great way to have fun and bond while improving those fine motor skills. Not only that, holiday-specific crafts can help kids understand the reason for each holiday. Get started today with these fun 4th of July crafts for kids that we’ve rounded up.
1. 4th of July Poppers
We love these super-easy and fun confetti poppers. Using materials you likely already have at home, even the littlest pint-sized patriot will get a kick out of watching the confetti pop out when the balloon at the end is pulled and released. Bonus: These festive poppers are much safer than sparklers! Get the how-to here.
2. Fizzy Fireworks
Like other fun childhood projects (remember the homemade "volcano"?), this cute art project relies on the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar. Simply “draw” some fireworks with glue inside clean coffee filters, and sprinkle baking soda on top. Then whip up batches of vinegar mixed with blue and red food coloring. Use a dropper to add the vinegar to your baking soda fireworks, and kaboom!
3. Spray-Painted Lawn Stars
Dress up your yard for the 4th with these fun lawn decorations. Cut out star-shaped stencils using construction paper and place them around your lawn as desired. Then use construction paint (or spray paint, if desired) to paint these fun, festive designs all around your house. If you want to get really creative, make stencils of rockets, flags, or fireworks.
4. Patriotic Paper Lanterns
Kids love to have their art displayed, and you’ll be happy to oblige with these Instagram-worthy red, white, and blue paper lanterns. Enlist the help of older children for the cutting, but even the youngest crafters can help decorate using star stickers, washi tape, and ribbon. Need instructions? Check out these easy instructions to make your own.
5. Festive Flower Pot
A bit of advance planning can have your flowers blooming in pots adorned with patriotic shades for the 4th. All you need are some clay pots; red, white, and blue paint; and paintbrushes. Set 'em up at a craft table, and let your littles go to town. Since this is one of the simplest 4th of July crafts for kids, you could even squeeze in a quick history lesson while your kids paint, if you're feeling ambitious. Pro tip: "Beth's Blue Star" flowers are a great pick for incorporating patriotic petals into your patriotic pots.
6. American Dreams Suncatcher
There’s no shortage of bright sunshine in July! Harness it with this suncatcher craft from A Little Pinch of Perfect. For this project, your kiddos will cut or rip tissue paper to form the base of these pretty 4th of July suncatchers. Hang them somewhere with lots of sun exposure to watch your kids' eyes light up, too!
7. Shaving Cream Fireworks
Here's an adult-sanctioned way for kids to play with shaving cream and get away with it. (To be honest, we love it as much as they do, which is why these shaving cream fireworks are one of our favorite 4th of July crafts for kids.) Snag some foaming white shaving cream on the cheap from Walmart or the Dollar Store (or borrow Dad's), and click here for the how-to!
8. Star-Spangled Slime
Looking for a holiday-specific sensory activity your kids will love? Look no further than slime — one of the most popular homemade kid trends in recent years. For this wonderfully gooey craft, you'll just need liquid starch, Elmer's glue, and food coloring. Check out this easy how-to, and get sliming.
9. Tin Can Windsock
This is the ultimate upcycled 4th of July craft (go green!), and your kids will love painting the tin cans blue and decorating them with stars and stripes. Plus, they're neat enough looking that you won't mind letting them hang around all summer. Find the instructions on here.
10. Toilet Paper Roll Fireworks
Looking for 4th of July crafts for tots under 2? Even the littlest artists can join in the fun with this cute (and thrifty!) craft that uses toilet paper rolls dipped in red, white, and blue paint to make fireworks. Simply use scissors to fray the edges, dip the frayed edge in the paint, and press down for some toddler-friendly DIY fireworks.
