We're a nation descended from talented, hardworking woodworkers.
That may sound like a strange thing to say, but it's true. We can see the brilliant ways that our forefathers have left their legacy across the American landscape through their architecture.
For years, Dan Pauly has set out to build structures that utilize centuries-old techniques and, very importantly, recycled and repurposed wood that our ancestors once also used to build their homes.
Pauly has built more than a few of these very interesting-looking cabins you're about to see. On the outside, they look like houses that have been depicted in the drawings of children's storybooks. These cabins all share the same whimsical, asymmetrical shape, and have cozy interiors.
One thing that's entirely different about these cabins, however, is that they house one very unique room. You'll have to scroll further to see for yourself what Pauly has built inside these beautifully charming cabins.

Woodworking artisan Dan Pauly is very passionate about antiques and old wood.

The Minnesota craftsman started The Rustic Way, a business that specializes in building garden sheds, guest cottages, playhouses, bunkies, outhouses and, very notably, saunas.

Pictures of his most famous designs have circulated the internet for a while. These cabins are small and asymmetrical, and have long, slanted roofs, crooked chimneys, and front windows. Some even have hanging built-in flower boxes.

Each of these cabins is built from reclaimed wood, which is a great material to use in construction when you want to be sustainable and environmentally-friendly.

The majority of the wood is sourced from the midwest, and the idea is to preserve as much of the wood as possible, and to help sustain its natural, weathered condition.

Dan's great-grandfather emigrated to the States in the late 1800s, and built several barns in central Minnesota. "As I uncover an old barn or shed, I realize that it could be the same lumber that my great-grandfather used more than 100 years ago," said Pauly. "I think that respect for the craftsmen and craftswomen of the past, and for the wood they used, make a difference in each new piece I create."
"Until you have dismantled an old barn, you can't imagine the painstaking effort it took from Old-World craftsmen to erect it. They were each a work of art," he says on his website.

The most unexpected component of the cabins is the sauna room. On his website, Pauly named the whimsical cabins the "original saunas."

Pauly believes that the wood used in building the cabins greatly reflect our country's heritage and history.

It "has a much richer and more attractive patina and grain" than a lot of the more modern wood being used today.

To us, his cabins look like they popped out from a Dr. Seuss drawing. But to Pauly, they are the ultimate form of respect paid to those who have come before us, and their everlasting woodworking techniques.
