Sometimes it takes more than one try to get something totally right — especially when it comes to DIY projects.
But often, the more challenging the DIY project, the more worthwhile the results. All it takes is some determination and vision, and you can create some extraordinary things — like turn an old shabby dresser into a beautiful bench.
For the very talented crafter Jen, owner of the blog Domesticated Nomad, her challenge was creating a beautiful and functional garden path. But as it turned out, this DIY garden path would take more than one try.
At first, the path looked perfect, but it wasn't able to stay pretty after a rough winter. So she reevaluated the situation and made changes! The results are extraordinary!

In Jen's vegetable garden, the grass between the wooden planks was a huge pain to trim.
So she came up with a brilliant plan! She grabbed the chainsaw and got to work.
She cut two-inch disks of wood from leftover logs and pressed them into the dirt to create a path between the different vegetables.
The wood popped out quite easily, so she planted ground cover thyme in the spaces in the hopes that it would secure the wood in place.
Unfortunately, after winter came, her logs didn't look so great... She knew she had to do something different to restore the path's beauty.
So she decided to give it another go! This time, she used shellac to preserve the wood, because it is natural and recommended by the EPA.
She pulled up the weathered log slices and got to work.
She coated one side of the wood with shellac and waited an hour for it to dry before coating the other side.
Instead of pressing the wood into the hard dirt, Jen and her hubby decided to till the soil.
They also added sand to try and keep the discs from popping out so much.
They planted ground cover again, to hopefully help keep the wood in place and make it look even prettier.
"I loved how the first path looked, so when I went and checked it last spring I was heartbroken at how it appeared," she said.
"I was determined to fix it, and so we did. I am in love with it once again," she said.
