Library Card Catalog Inspires One-Of-A-Kind Coffee Table

For those of us who absolutely love interior decorating, the furniture and décor of our dreams rarely resemble items stocked in stores.

This can sometimes lead to endless shopping trips — scouring store after store for the right bed, couch, table, and so on.

When Instructables DIY-er kingcarpenter recently dreamed up a specific coffee table design he couldn't possibly live without, he decided to build the piece himself.

Taking a DIY approach ensured the piece would come out exactly as planned. He wanted a design that would work well as a quintessential coffee table, but could also lift up, doubling as a dinner table of sorts.

Additionally, he wanted the table to aesthetically resemble a card catalog cabinet. By building this one-of-a-kind table himself, this DIY-er was able to craft his perfect coffee table, totally suited to his particular taste and style.

Scroll through below to see how this DIY-er turned his design idea into a gorgeous and useful home addition.

When Instructables DIY-er kingcarpenter envisioned his perfect coffee table, it was likely a design he'd never find in any run-of-the-mill home goods store.

He wanted a dual-purpose piece that would serve as a normal coffee table most of the time, but could also easily be converted into a table high enough to comfortably eat off of at will.

He also wanted the table to resemble an old library card catalog cabinet.

There was only one way for this DIY-er would be able to get the coffee table of his dreams — by building it himself.

After assembling the coffee table's frame, this DIY-er filled in each side with wood of varying widths. This design tactic added interesting texture to the entire piece.

He also mapped out a faux-drawer design on the coffee table's front, achieving the desired card catalog appearance.

To completely nail this card catalog cabinet look, this DIY-er even added the appropriate hardware to each drawer.

He also wrote little labels for each handle — a beautifully specific touch.

Next came time to tackle the dual functionality component of this design.

To be able to use this coffee table as a dining table when necessary, this DIY-er installed fancy top-lifting hinges.

These hinges allow the table to transform into a dinner-level table at will, perfectly suited for meals parked in front of the television.

Designing the table top to lift this way also afforded the DIY-er ample storage space inside the table's core.

Hinges in place, it was time to finish this beautiful coffee table design.

This DIY-er filled in any lingering nail holes, then hit the entire piece with stain.

After his stain set, he covered the entire coffee table in Danish oil, shrinking the wood's pores for added stability.

When inspiration struck, this DIY-er took it upon himself to build the coffee table of his dreams.
