We've put away our pool toys, folded up our tank tops, and brought the lawn chairs back inside. It's true, we've officially said "goodbye" to summer.
But if you're anything like me, you might be longing to keep a little bit of summer with you to keep the bleary winter weather at bay — like this sun-worshiper who transformed collected sea glass and shells into a gorgeous patio table.
That's why I was totally blown away when I saw how this DIY-er completely repurposed beach driftwood, capturing the season in her kitchen for years to come!
The best part? With a few simple tools and a little bit of time, this awesome driftwood knife rack could be yours! It's a cheap and fun DIY craft project that promises to impress at your next dinner party, all without breaking the bank.

To start, she grabbed a few pieces of driftwood and some dry lumber. The driftwood itself was plucked from the ocean off Point Bonita, CA.
With her table saw, she prepped the driftwood pieces by cutting them down the center, leaving one surface smooth and the other as found.
Next, she glued the driftwood to the middle section of lumber, using a chip brush to spread the glue evenly. Once finished, she secured everything with bar clamps and let it set overnight.
Once the glue was set, she mounted the piece on her saw and flattened the back side, to even everything out.
Next, it was time to create the knife slots, so each utensil had its own special space. She decided on fifteen in total.
But she wasn't done yet! Our crafty lady glued on one more section of lumber for stability and a third piece of driftwood for uniformity.
She reminded us that a lot of this process was simple trial and error, noting, "Don't be afraid to change a design anytime during the build."
Finally, she mixed up some clear unwaxed shellac and gave the entire piece three coats for an extra luxe finish.
The final product? A truly one-of-a-kind knife block!
She shared a close-up of the rack: a totally unique piece to complement your kitchen at home!
