What is better than a beautifully crafted woodworking project? One with an extra pinch of panache.
For instance, you can take an ordinary wooden door and flip it into a really cool, asymmetrical coffee table. Or you can take a coffee table and add some sizzle by inserting a fireplace into the middle of it. Believe me, once you do that, making s’mores will never be the same again!
But how do you make a shelf special? A shelf is a shelf, right? You take a piece of wood, you mount it on a wall, and it’s what you put on this shelf that is special — mason jars filled with homemade jam, your favorite cookbook, a picture of your grandma.
But sometimes, a very crafty craftsman, like Reddit user auntie-matter, figures out how to make a shelf truly shine…
The first step in this amazing shelf project was finding a big, cracked, knot-holed piece of chestnut. She found the perfect slab at a timber yard.

Then all the holes and cracks had to be sealed with aluminum tape.

Then the wood had to be set somewhere nice and level.

Next step? Time to make this shelf sparkle!

How? You need a little bit of this powdery, blue resin.

Add a little water to the resin to make it glow.

Then you pour the glow-goo into the cracks in the wood.

Look at that purdy blue color!

Now there’s a nice swirl!

After the glow-goo has dried, it’s time to add some oil. This shelf got about eight thin coats of boiled linseed oil.

Then it was time to prep the wall!

The first shelf was mounted.

Look at that baby glow!

Whoa!

The details ended up really nice.

The final product was one truly extraordinary shelf!
